Logos That Fit Your Business

The audience for any business is often unique, but the purposes of a logo are fairly consistent:

  • Make a distinct visual impression.
  • Brand a name in the mind's eye.

The Rules of Logo Design

Logos are meant to imprint an image in the eye and minds of those who see it. So logos should be:

  • simple.
  • visually distinct.
  • usable as a small thumbnail on business cards or as a gigantic graphic on billboards.
  • usable in a single color.
  • designed in a vector file format so they can be enlarged to any size without losing quality.

Usability and Simplicity

Take a look around you right now. Walk through your office or home and find logos of big companies that spent lots of money on them. You've seen them before: HP, Nike, Epson, Lays, Colgate-Palmolive, and I could go on. Their logos are all simple.

Even companies that make graphic design software like Adobe, Macromedia (back when they were Macromedia) and Corel. They all have simple logos.

Why? It's a brand symbol that appears in many different places: web sites, business cards, brochures, tee shirts, hats, pens and possibly anywhere.

We can embellish a logo with effects, shadows and highlights, but the initial design should be simple. It should work on a plastic pen or a billboard.

Distinction

Logos also have to make a visual impression. We do that, too. We'll let the samples on the right speak for themselves.
